The article “Experience From a Transformation” is part of the Realdania-funded research project at the Aarhus Center for Regenerative Building and the Aarhus School of Architecture: “Regenerative Architecture – examples, processes and stories from an ongoing paradigm shift in the built environment”. The project will be compiled into a publication to be released in 2026.
This article addresses the fundamental question of how architecture can not only reduce its climate and ecological footprint but also actively contribute to the regeneration and strengthening of ecosystems, material cycles, and social communities.
The study is based on concrete cases, identifies structural and practical barriers, and outlines possible pathways for a regenerative transformation of the building sector. The main case study is the VELUX Innovation House, designated as one of ten “lighthouse projects” with particular potential to demonstrate operational principles for regenerative architecture.
The analysis covers environmental and resource impacts, circularity strategies, biodiversity implications, site-specific conditions, as well as social and political dimensions.
